Quantitative Databases

The Project databases are gradually being made available to the public where no privacy concerns exist around the contained information.

  1. The Caversham Database
  2. The Sites of Gender Database

The Caversham Database

The original Caversham database includes everyone living within the boundaries of Caversham Borough and was constructed to examine patterns of social and geographical mobility, residential differentiation, and their interrelationships. This data was been collected from a number of sources:

Marriage Certificates & Marriage Registers

Registry Marriages 1893-1913. This ends in 1913 because at this date the Registrar stopped entering suburbs. As only a very small proportion chose a civil ceremony we have not tried to enter the rest.

Stone's & Wise's Post Office Directories

The Stone's and Wise's directories have been used to search for residents of Caversham borough prior to their arrival in Caversham or after their departure from Caversham borough for the following years:

1902, 1903, 1905, 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1915, 1919, 1920, 1920, 1921, and 1922.

The Sites of Gender database

For this project we have constructed a larger database covering all the suburbs of Southern Dunedin, collectively called 'The Flat'. This database consists of over 140,000 records covering around 50,000 individuals. This database was specifically designed to allow interrogation of the meaning and importance of gender as a structural feature of urban society in the early part of the twentieth century. It also increases our ability to analyse the significance of ethnicity.
The new database includes:

Electoral Rolls

  • 1893 Caversham, City of Dunedin
  • 1896 Caversham
  • 1899 Caversham
  • 1902 Caversham
  • 1905 Caversham
  • 1911 Dunedin Central, Dunedin South
  • 1914 Dunedin Central, Dunedin South
  • 1919 Dunedin Central, Dunedin South
  • 1922 Dunedin Central, Dunedin South
  • 1925 Dunedin Central, Dunedin South
  • 1928 Dunedin Central, Dunedin South
  • 1931 Dunedin Central, Dunedin South
  • 1935 Dunedin Central, Dunedin South
  • 1938 Dunedin Central, Dunedin South

Stone's Trade Directories 1893-1939

Used to determine the occupational status of people by checking for business listings.

Death certificates (1893 - 1938)

The Sites of Gender database was completed in late 1999.
