     MH:  Oh yes.  You see when I got married I remember taking the mats and 
hanging  them on the line and had a broom and a flat broom you know and we used 
to whack the  mats.  That's how we cleaned them.  It was hard work and dirty 
work whereas a few years  after I got married I had an ELECTROLUX.  And I always 
had an electrolux.  I just did  the house with the lux.  I didn't need the broom 
to whack the mats then.  But it made  life a lot easier for women because they 
didn't have that hard extra work to do.            381

      MJ:      Well, I should imagine they would have talked it over. But I can 
't  remember them buying anything. Maybe, maybe an ELECTROLUX, Electrolux when 
they came  around then, but I don 't remember them buying any big things.

      NN:      She did a lot of starching things, you don 't see that today. You 
see I  wore - we had to wear smocks in the cake-shop, and she starched the 
smocks and some of  the customers that came in would say, oh, your smock looks 
so nice, and she always made  a good job of them. So, oh no it was different in 
those days, they didn 't have  ELECTROLUX 's or anything like that then, they 
worked very hard, and she 'd be down on her  knees scrubbing the floor, and, you 
know, and - oh she was a very hard worker. She had a  beautiful garden.

      NN:      Oh, yes, oh, she had, uhm, sewing machine of course. She made all 
our  clothes and she was a very good sewer. And ... but you know they didn 't 
have the  conveniences that we 've got these days, and they didn 't have 
ELECTROLUX or anything like 
that.

great help,  but that and the Ubank carpet sweeper, I remember, main methods, 
but I, I remember that  not many people had an Electrolux at that stage, and we
